Say what you will about her lyrical style, Nicki Minaj is one beautiful black woman. I think she’s a smart business woman, fully aware of her power in the music industry, and most especially with women. In the Out Magazine feature, she talks about how she uses that knowledge to support women. She ducks labels, too, which is the half the battle of many women in popular culture.
I’ve read and heard discussions about Minaj’s movement and if it’s not stanning it’s straight hating. But look beyond the hype. I see many opportunities for women to use entertainment to educate and engage even in the uphill battle for representation. Nicki Minaj capitalizes on the power of images to bend, confront and complicate the American view of Black women.
